“My future goal is to attend medical school in hopes of becoming a pediatrician.”

Major: Biology     Minor: Spanish

Why did you choose Central? I chose Central because of the friendly and small school environment. Everyone, including other students on campus, was very welcoming. Being able to meet one on one with professors was definitely something that made Central stand out as well. It truly feels like a home away from home.

Have you studied abroad, or do you plan to? I have not studied abroad, but I would love the opportunity to go to Merida if my schedule allows it. I have heard good things about the health-program and internships offered there.

What are your future goals? My future goal is to attend medical school in hopes of becoming a pediatrician. A couple of years down the road, I would also like to have a family of my own and provide some financial support to my parents.

What activities do you participate in on and off campus? On campus, I am involved in Campus Ministries, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, The National Society of Leadership and Success, Student Support Services and OLAS (Organization of Latin-American Students). I also have a work-study job on campus as a supplemental instructor for a biology course.

What has been your favorite class? My favorite class so far has been Diversity of Life. I loved learning about all the different organisms and how they function. We were also able to go to Central’s field station for lab field trips and apply our knowledge obtained from lectures in a real-world setting. The professor and lab instructor were very friendly and helpful as well.

Who has been your favorite professor? Why? It’s hard to pick just one. My favorite biology professor so far has been Dr. Wiehe. He is very enthusiastic about the subject and is very open to offer help when needed. Also, he has a lot of biology jokes and has sarcastic remarks that always made me laugh during lecture. I also like my math professor, Dr. Mills. He has an incredibly kind heart and is always available for help outside of class.

Have you done any internships? Do you plan to? I have not done any internships, but I would like to complete one during my time at Central.

Hobbies/Interests: I enjoy listening to music, writing poems, going to bible study and watching soccer during my free time. I also like to read my biology textbooks for fun sometimes and my friends like to tease me about that.

Fun fact about yourself: I am originally from Brooklyn, New York. I moved to Iowa when I was nine, but I am still a city girl at heart.

Favorite food in Central Market: Burritos and fajitas are my two favorites.

What has been your favorite Central Memory so far? My favorite has been running the Lemming Race with my friends this past year. We dressed up as the 101 Dalmatians and it was such a fun time.

What do you like about your major? I am a biology major because I love learning about how life and organisms work. I enjoy the fact that I can take classes that deal with human biology and others that deal with more field biology. I find it very interesting and science has always been one of my favorite subjects.

What book are you currently reading? Or what is your favorite book? One of my favorite books is The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. I first read The Little Prince in French during my senior year of high school and I have yet to read it in English. I love the deep meanings and ideas about life the book presents.
