Central’s Sowers named league female athlete of the week

Softball | April 7, 2014

PELLA—Central College softball third baseman Whitney Sowers (junior, Marshalltown) has been named Iowa Conference female athlete of the week after leading the No. 11-ranked Dutch to a 6-0 record, leaving head coach George Wares one victory shy of becoming the first coach in NCAA Division III history to post 1,000 wins.

Sowers finished with three multi-hit games, highlighted by a 3-for-3 performance in Monday’s second game against Wis.-Eau Claire, which included two home runs, one double, four runs batted in and three runs scored. She finished the nonconference twin bill 6-for-7.

Central swept Wis.-Eau Claire Monday, Wartburg Saturday and Webster (Mo.) Sunday.

Over the six games, Sowers batted .579 (11-for-19) and slugged 1.105 with four doubles, two home runs and three walks while striking out only once. She tallied 10 runs scored, seven RBIs and one stolen base. And she did all of that while registering eight putouts and 14 assists without committing a single error at the hot corner.

It’s Sowers’ second career conference position player of the week honor and first-ever league female athlete of the week honor.

The Dutch (22-4 overall, 2-0 conference) take their first crack at Wares’ 1,000th win in Tuesday’s conference doubleheader against No. 5-ranked Luther College (16-3 overall, 1-1 conference) at Decorah. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
