11 NCAA Div. III national team championships
PELLA—Six Central College student-athletes have been named to the 2013-14 Iowa Conference winter sports All-Academic Team.
The Dutch women’s basketball team accounted for four honorees, highlighted by 25-game starters Rachel Evans (junior, Fort Dodge) and Jessy Stika (senior, Cresco, Crestwood HS). Evans, an athletic training major, led all Central honorees with a 3.97 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and was the defensive standout for the Dutch, who put together their winningest campaign since 2004.
Senior Hilary Beaird (Burlington) and sophomore Katie Sunderman (Pella) of the women’s basketball team also received distinction.
It’s Beaird’s and Stika’s third honor, Evans’ second and Sunderman’s first.
Men’s basketball players Nile Eckermann (junior, Cosgrove, Clear-Creek Amana HS) and Aaron Rosenstiel (junior, Oelwein) were winter selections as well.
Eckermann, an exercise science major, was an integral part of the Dutch men’s basketball team that made its deepest postseason run since 1991 after tallying a first-round NCAA tournament win. Central advanced to its 10th national tourney, the most of any conference school, after winning its 17th league title.
It’s Rosenstiel’s second honor and Eckermann’s first.
To qualify for the distinction, a student-athlete must compete at the varsity level, be at least a sophomore in academic standing with at least one year at the institution and achieve a 3.5 or better cumulative GPA.
