Men's cross country | Oct. 23, 2013

PELLA—The Central College men’s cross country team again climbed one spot—this time to No. 9—in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III poll.

The Dutch placed 3rd of 30 teams with 104 points at the highly competitive Wis.-La Crosse Jim Drews Invitational Saturday. Senior Austin O’Brien (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) finished runner-up in the 496-individual field with 24:48.6 on the 8,000-meter course and was named Iowa Conference men’s cross country runner of the week. No. 3 St. Olaf (Minn.) won the invitational with 41 points. Host Wis.-La Crosse—ranked No. 5—was second with 96.

Central—which re-entered the top 10 last week for the first time since ranking No. 7 in the preseason poll on Aug. 28—bumped up as Wis.-Oshkosh fell from No. 7 to No. 10.

Iowa Conference rival Luther jumped 10 spots to No. 24, while Loras dropped one to No. 28 and Wartburg fell out of the rankings.

The Dutch remained No. 2 in the Central Region, as St. Olaf retained the top spot. Iowa Conference schools comprise four of the top seven in the region as Luther and Loras sit behind Central at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, with Wartburg at No. 7.

Central hosts the Iowa Conference championships November 2 at noon. The Dutch captured their first league title ever last fall.
