Women's tennis | Sept. 21, 2013

PELLA-The Central College women’s tennis team improved to 7-1 with an 8-1 win over Morningside on Saturday afternoon.

In what has become the norm, the Dutch swept doubles for the early advantage. Sophomores Angie Allgood (Muscatine) and Megan Davis (Highlands Ranch, Colo., Valor Christian HS) set the tone with an 8-3 win at No. 1. Anna Bowser (sophomore, Fort Dodge) and Ashlyn Huegel (junior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) won 8-5 at No. 2, as did Sarah Montgomery (junior, Bettendorf) and Katie Todd (sophomore, Cedar Falls) at No. 3.

Central won five of the six singles matches, all in straight sets. Allgood dominated at the top spot in a 6-1, 6-0 win. Bowser led 5-1 in the first set when her opponent defaulted due to injury. Huegel, Montgomery and Todd were winners at No. 4, 5 and 6, respectively. Huegel won 7-5, 6-1, while Montgomery won 6-1, 6-2. Todd remained undefeated (8-0) on the season with a 6-4, 6-3 victory. Morningside (1-1) scored its lone team point at No. 2 singles.

“Doubles set the tone for the rest of the meet,” coach Steve Tyler said. “Angie played great at No. 1 and led our team. Sarah and Katie continue to win matches at the bottom of the lineup, which will be critical moving forward.

“It was a great day for collegiate tennis. It was nice to be home and we played well. It is a good win and puts us in great position for our last three meets, all in the Iowa Conference.”

Central (7-1 overall, 3-1 conference) returns to A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex courts on Tuesday against Simpson at 3:30 p.m. The Storm defeated the Dutch twice last season, once in the fall (5-4) and once in the spring (6-3).
