Dutch men’s tennis team closes out fall dual schedule with win

Men's tennis | Sept. 17, 2013

FORT DODGE-The Central College men’s tennis team closed out its fall dual schedule with a 7-2 win over Buena Vista on Tuesday night.

The Dutch and the Beavers (0-1) battled the elements, as wet courts and evening showers postponed play for nearly one hour.

Central swept doubles and never looked back. West Adelman (sophomore, Geneva, Ill.) and Tim Kahl (junior, Grinnell) won 8-3 at the top doubles spot, while Josh Forst (junior, Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) and John Seier (senior, Waverly, Neb.) won 8-5 at No. 2. BJ Cunningham (senior, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) and Rick Williamson (junior, Pella) completed the sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 3.

Due to loss of daylight, the two teams played eight-game pro sets in singles as opposed to the traditional first to six games, best two out of three sets. Adelman and Kahl secured the team decision with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Adelman won 8-2, while Kahl won 8-0. Cunningham was an 8-2 winner at No. 5, while Trevor Sensor (sophomore, Sterling, Ill.) closed out the meet with an 8-0 win at No. 6.

“We came out with good energy in doubles, especially after a rain delay,” coach Steve Tyler said. “We set the tone early and it carried us through the meet. It was a good way to end the dual portion of our fall schedule.”

Central (2-0) hosts the Iowa Conference individual tournament on Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m.
