Central No. 17 in preseason men's golf poll

Men's golf | Sept. 1, 2013

PELLA — The Central College men’s golf team’s strong showing on the national stage last spring made enough of an impression to vault the Dutch into the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches’ Division III preseason poll, opening at No. 17.

It’s Central’s first appearance in the rankings since being listed No. 23 in May, 2011, in the final poll of the 2010-11 campaign.

The Dutch were unranked throughout the past two seasons, despite winning Iowa Conference titles both years and advancing to the NCAA Division III tournament. Central opened some eyes by making the 36-hole cut at the national tournament in Destin, Fla. last May and placing 12th in a 41-team field.

Fourth-year coach Chad Green returns four of the five varsity players who made that trip, but graduated team MVP Justin Livingston.

Transylvania (Ky.) is ranked No. 1, ahead of Oglethorpe (Ga.) and perennial power Methodist (N.C.). No other Iowa Conference schools are ranked although Luther is among those receiving votes.

Central has captured 31 conference titles, including the past five, while making 32 NCAA tournament appearances. The Dutch open the fall portion of their schedule Sept. 13-14 at the Carthage (Wis.) College Tim Kopka Memorial Tournament, played at the par-71 Randall Oaks Golf Club in West Dundee, Ill. The fall slate is highlighted by a trip to the Gordin Division III Classic Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Columbus, Ohio. The tourney features many of the top finishers from last spring’s NCAA meet.

Women’s rankings—Central is among those schools receiving votes in the Golf World/Women’s Golf Coaches Assocation preseason poll. Defending league champion Wartburg also received votes but no conference schools cracked the top 25. Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas), the defending champ, is No. 1 ahead of Methodist (N.C.).
