Central awaits national track and field selections

NAPERVILLE, ILL.—The Central College mens’s and women’s track and field squads made one more attempt for national qualifying marks at the North Central (Ill.) Gregory Invitational Friday evening.

The women’s 4x400-meter squad of Camie Kibbee (sophomore, Mason City)Taylor Beckman (sophomore, Panora, Panorama HS)Elin Phipps (freshman, Boone), and Katie Sunderman (freshman, Pella) took eighth overall with a season’s best time of three minutes, 56.99 seconds. Meanwhile, the men’s foursome of Mason Zimmerman (sophomore, Urbandale)Austin Roberts (freshman, Bloomfield, Davis County HS)Ty Westphal (senior, Le Mars), and Spencer Hammack (freshman, Ottumwa) was ninth overall in 3:18.61.

Ben Schornack (senior, Urbandale) crossed the line in the 800 meters 17th with his fastest time of the year (1:54.98), while Eli Horton (sophomore Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) was fifth in the 1,500 meters (3:55.26) and Drake Hickok (freshman, Cedar Rapids, Washington HS) was seventh in the 400 hurdles (54.62).

The Division III national meet will be staged at La Crosse, Wis. May 23-25 and qualifiers will be announced Sunday. The men’s and women’s fields will take the top-20 and top-22 marks, respectively, along with the top 16 relays.
