Freeman leads league decathlon at halfway mark

DUBUQUE — Sophomore Conner Freeman (Urbandale) leads the Iowa Conference decathlon after five events as the Central College men’s and women’s track and field squads kicked off the league championship meet Thursday.

Freeman posted a score of 3,237 points after one day of competition. The women’s squad has three in scoring position in the heptathlon with Morgan Sharp (senior, Grinnell) leading the way in fourth (2,393), while Kaitlyn Gillett (sophomore, Cedar Falls) and Hilary Hotz (sophomore, Fort Dodge, St. Edmond HS) are sitting in fifth (2,337) and eighth (2,165) respectively. Jaemin Powell (freshman, Wellman, Mid-Prairie HS) suffered a hamstring injury and will not finish the decathlon.

The combined events competition will resume Friday at 9 a.m. Field events will begin at 12 p.m. while running events will start at 3 p.m.
