Central continues softball rankings climb

Softball | May 1, 2013

PELLA — Central College continues to climb in the NFCA Division III Top 25 softball poll, moving up two more spots to No. 12.

The Dutch, who jumped five spots last week, swept preseason Iowa Conference favorite Luther College at Pella Saturday, 1-0 (8 inn.) and 5-3 to improve to 28-7 overall. The sweep gave Central a share of its 11th conference crown with a 12-2 league mark. That tied Coe College (31-5), which slipped a notch to No. 11. Simpson (29-9) returns to the rankings at No. 22 while Luther is among those receiving votes.

Salisbury (Md.) is the new leader with a 35-2 mark,  receiving all eight first-place votes to move up from No. 3. Regional rival St. Thomas (Minn.) (31-5) rose to No. 9.

Central is slated to compete in the Iowa Conference tournament at Cedar Rapids, opening with a 4 p.m. game Friday against the winner of a noon contest between Luther and Buena Vista. Central’s tournament games will air on KRLS-FM (92.1) with Trevor Castle and can be heard via www.kniakrls.com.
