15 NCAA Div. III individual championships
PELLA—Central College sophomore Eric Larson (Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) is the Iowa Conference male athlete of the week.
Meanwhile, Central’s distance medley relay squad is the men’s track events performer of the week. Senior Dirk Lindaman (senior, Ankeny) and sophomore Mallory Schulenberg (Kansas City, Mo., St. Pius X HS) are the pitchers of the week in baseball and softball, respectively, and senior Justin Livingston (Winterset) is the men’s golfer of the week.
Larson recorded the top Division III decathlon mark at the Drake Relays last Thursday. He scored a career-high 6,717 points and finished eighth in the field, but was first among Div. III competitors. It’s the first time Larson, a three-time all-American, has received athlete of the week recognition and the second time this season he’s been tabbed the field events performer of the week.
Central’s distance medley relay team brought down the school record at Drake with a time of 9:55.87. The crew of sophomore Drew Jackson (Johnston), senior Philip Heisterkamp (Jefferson, Jefferson-Scranton HS), senior Ben Schornack (Urbandale) and sophomore Eli Horton (Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) nearly won the event, falling to defending indoor national champion Wis.-La Crosse. The squad’s mark was almost eight seconds faster than last year’s school-record time.
The Dutch track and field squads compete at the Monmouth College (Ill.) Invitational Saturday for a final tune-up before the conference championships.
Lindaman captured the 10-inning complete-game win, 2-1, against Buena Vista University Saturday. He allowed six hits and improved to 4-3 while fanning seven and walking three. Lindaman, a 2012 first-team all-conference and second-team all-region pick, also posted three assists. It’s his first time this year receiving pitcher of the week honors. The Dutch (17-16 overall, 9-13 conference) take on Luther College in a four-game series, starting at 1 p.m. Friday in Decorah.
Schulenberg fired a three-hit shutout in a 1-0, eight-inning win against No. 24 Luther Saturday. A 5-3 victory in the nightcap led Central to a share of the conference title. Schulenberg struck out six and walked none to improve to 12-1. It’s the third time Schulenberg has been cited this year. No. 14 Central (27-6 overall, 12-2 conference) heads to Cedar Rapids Thursday for the league tournament and meets the winner of Luther and Buena Vista at 4 p.m.
Livingston is tied for the medalist lead at the halfway point of the conference tournament. He fired a 1-under-par 71 on the Finkbine Golf Course at Iowa City last Saturday, the day’s best round, and shares the 36-hole lead at 82-71—153 with Luther’s Andrew Peter. A two-time all-conference honoree, Livingston helped the Dutch slice 28 strokes off their first-round score to vault from a 2-shot deficit to a 13-stroke lead. Central, which has won 30 league titles, including the past four, wraps up the 72-hole tournament Friday and Saturday at the Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids.
