Simpson sweeps Central men’s soccer team

Men's soccer | Oct. 10, 2012

INDIANOLA—With nine saves for the game, Central College goalkeeper Travis Yets (junior, Bettendorf) attempted to keep the men’s soccer team alive against Simpson College, but the Storm proved to be too much in the 5-0 loss.

“Travis had a great game,” said coach Garry Laidlaw. “He kept us in the game for a long time with some nice saves.”

The Dutch struggled getting their momentum going after a scoreless first half.

“Tonight we were a little out of sorts and a little undermanned,” he said. “Simpson (9-5-1 overall, 2-1-1 conference) played a very good match. They were much sharper and clinical in the final third of the field.”

The Dutch were outshot 23-9 and Simpson doubled Central’s shots on goal 14-7. Forward Jordan Appenzeller (senior, Boone) took three shots with two shots on goal while midfielder Matt Woodcock (senior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) had two shots and two on goal. Forward Ralph Palmeri (senior, St. Charles, Ill., Marmion Academy HS) had two shots and one shot on goal. Brian Fyfe (sophomore, Clear Lake) and Nick Hauenstein (sophomore, Nevada) took one shot each.

“I give credit to our guys for being classy in defeat,” Laidlaw said. “We showed heart and character and never stopped playing until the final whistle.”

Central (4-8-1 overall, 1-3-0 conference) continues Iowa Conference play Saturday, facing off against Buena Vista University (5-7-1 overall, 0-3 conference) at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex soccer field at 3:30 p.m. Last year’s match against the Beavers ended in a 6-0 Dutch blowout.

“At this point in the season, every point is vital,” said Laidlaw. “Buena Vista is going to come in hungry for points, and we are going to regroup.”
