Eight Iowa Conference championships
PELLA — Central College senior Ashley Smith (Johnsburg, Ill.) posted a career-best Iowa Conference finish, climbing to third at the Iowa Conference women’s golf tournament Saturday.
Smith overcame icy winds at Pella’s Bos Landen Golf Club and closed at 85-80-78-86—330 /Simpson’s Jennifer Gaffney took medalist honors at 72-82-85-86—324, two shots better than Abby Potts of Loras.
“It was great to see Ashley finish her conference career on a high note,” coach Tim Wilkinson said. “She aggravated an injury last night but she still went out and performed well today.”
The first 36 holes of the 72-hole tournament were played Sept. 28-29 at the Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls.
Central’s Kelsey Van Tasell (sophomore, Pella) also earned all-league honors for the first time, placing ninth at 77-80-83-95—335.
“We certainly feel good about Kelsey making all-conference even though she didn’t have the greatest day today,” Wilkinson said. “She’s had a great season.”
But the Dutch were playing without No. 1 player Taylor Hill (sophomore, Treynor), who had to withdraw from the tourney last week because of illness. And without her Saturday they slipped from third to fifth in the team standings. Wartburg repeated as champion with 307-312-347-364—1330. Luther was next at 1376 with Simpson at 1407, Loras at 1414 and Central at 332-331-371-399—1433.
It was a tough day for Central’s freshmen. Chelsey Shuey (Ames) finished at 87-86-100-108, Emily Fisher (Wapello) had 94-85-109-110—398 and Jill Huffman (Bloomington, Ill., Normal HS) shot 111-111—222 in her two rounds filling in for Hill.
“Hopefully we can learn from this and benefit moving forward,” Wilkinson said.
The tourney concludes Central’s fall season.
