DUBUQUE — The Central College men’s soccer team needed a flawless effort at No. 5-ranked Loras College Saturday, but a couple errors proved costly in a 2-0 Iowa Conference setback.

“I was pleased with about 95 percent of what we did today,” said coach Garry Laidlaw. “Loras is a strong team with great speed.”

The Duhawks (12-1-1 overall, 3-0 conference) scored both goals in the first half, and the Dutch (4-7-1 overall, 1-2 conference) couldn’t regain momentum in the second. Central was outshot 15-3.

“We allowed one critical mistake during the game by letting them get in behind us,” said Laidlaw. “It ended with an own goal. But, otherwise we played a solid game.”

Aleksandar Glavas (sophomore, Loves Park, Ill., Guilford HS)Matt Woodcock (senior, West Des Moines, Valley HS)Ralph Palmeri (senior, St. Charles, Ill., Marmion Academy HS) each took one shot.Goalkeeper Travis Yets (jurnior, Bettendorf) saved four balls.

Although it was a tough loss, Laidlaw was impressed with the effort.

“I thought we did fairly well in trying to neutralize their strengths,” he said. “We created a couple of chances to score, but we weren’t able to capitalize on the situation.

Brian Fyfe (sophomore, Clear Lake) had a solid game in back and Dennis Forrest (sophomore, Danville, Ill.) had a strong game in midfield,” Laidlaw said.

On Wednesday, the Dutch travel to Indianola to face off against Simpson College (8-4-1 overall, 1-2-0 conference). Central tied with Simpson in double overtime last year.

“Simpson is having a good season, and we look forward to a challenge,” said Laidlaw.
