Football | Oct. 2, 2012

PELLA—Central College sophomores Blaine Forsythe (Pella) and Eli Horton (Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) were tabbed the Iowa Conference players of the week for football special teams and men’s cross country, respectively.

Forsythe booted four punts in Central’s 31-24 win against the University of Dubuque Saturday. He averaged 40.2 yards per kick with a long of 47, and had one touchback while placing one inside the 20-yard line. Forsythe also had an 8-yard reception. His season punting average of 40.6 yards ranks second in the league and 19th in Div. III. Forsythe has seven punts inside the 20 for the Dutch, who are 2-2 overall with a 1-0 conference mark.

Meanwhile, Horton took sixth place at the University of Minnesota Roy Griak Invitational Saturday, crossing the line in 26 minutes, 4.1 seconds. He led the Dutch to fourth place in the loaded 27-team field with 103 points, just behind Wis.-Platteville (102) and Wis.-Eau Claire (96). Wis.-La Crosse, ranked No. 10 in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll, won the title with 45 points.

This is the second time Horton, a 2011 NCAA Div. III cross country championships participant, has received the honor. He was also recognized Sept. 2 after capturing the individual crown at the Dutch Invitational.
