Hill leads Central at Illinois Wesleyan

Women's golf | Sept. 15, 2012

NORMAL, ILL.—Taylor Hill (sophomore, Treynor) turned in a 78 to top the Central College women’s golf lineup after the first round of the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Invitational Saturday.

Hill is 15th in the 22-team field that features institutions from NCAA Divisions II and III and the NAIA. Central is in 14th at 342. Wittenberg University and William Wood University are tied for first at 309.

Competing on the par-72 Ironwood Golf Course, Ashley Smith (senior, Johnsburg, Ill.) is tied for 24th at 81, Kelsey Van Tasell (sophomore, Pella) is tied for 80th at 90, Chelsey Shuey (freshman, Ames) is tied for 93rd at 93 and Emily Fisher (freshman, Wapello) is tied for 102nd at 97.

“We need to be a little more consistent from top to bottom,” coach Tim Wilkinson said. “It’s important for us to count four scores under 90.”

Wilkinson was pleased with the top two golfers.

“Taylor and Ashley played well and both felt like they could play better,” Wilkinson said. “They did a good job staying positive throughout the round and grinding it out on holes that didn’t go so well.”

Wilkinson expects the Dutch to improve in the final round Sunday, which begins at 9 a.m.

“The players will be more comfortable with the greens and the layout of the course,” he said. “We’ll need to get off to a great start to play up to our potential.”
