18 top-three league team finishes in past 32 years
INDIANOLA — Despite a fast start in doubles, the Central College women’s tennis team suffered its first loss of the season, 5-4 at Simpson College Tuesday.
The Dutch (3-1) had a shot at sweeping the doubles. Angie Allgood (freshman, Muscatine) and Megan Davis (freshman, Denver, Colo., Valor Christian HS) were 9-7 winners at No. 1 while Ashlyn Huegel (sophomore, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) and Amanda Kuhn (freshman, Glen Ellyn, Ill., Glenbard South) scored an 8-3 win at No. 3 but the Dutch dropped a 9-7 decision at No. 2.
Then Simpson (4-3) took four singles matches to pull out the win. Central’s Allgood won at No. 1, 6-4, 6-1 and Anna Bowser (freshman, Fort Dodge) was a 6-3, 6-3 victor at No. 5.
“We didn’t play like we could,” coach Steve Tyler said. “But I knew it would be a close match. Simpson’s got several seniors on that team.”
Central’s young squad was without its lone senior, Chelsea Johnson (Mount Vernon), who is sidelined by illness.
“It sounds simplistic, but (Simpson) just got more balls in play,” Tyler said. “They just kept it coming back and coming back and we got too big, trying to go for the big shot. We’ve got to work on being more consistent.
“But we’re playing with a lot of folks who are pretty young and they’re just getting used to playing in the college ranks. We’ll get better.”
Central travels to Monmouth, Ill. to take on Monmouth College and Knox College (Ill.) Saturday. The Dutch blanked Monmouth 9-0 last year but did not meet Knox. Monmouth is 0-3 and Knox is 0-4.
