St. Catherine edges Central women’s soccer squad

Women's soccer | Sept. 5, 2012

PELLA— An early second-half goal pushed St. Catherine University (Minn.) to a 2-1 win over the Central College women’s soccer team Wednesday evening.

Elly Leyva netted the unassisted game-winning goal for the Wildcats just three minutes in to break the 1-1 tie.

Central forward Alayna Bailey (junior, Des Moines, Hoover HS) put the Dutch on the board first, scoring her second goal of the season off a pass from midfielder Liz Clancy (senior, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) 11 minutes into the first half. St. Catherine (3-0) knotted the score less than three minutes later.

“St. Kate’s was direct and a constant go-go-go,” coach Mike Kobylinski said. “They had three strikers up front and put our backs under some pressure.”

Bailey and midfielder Hannah Davy (junior, Cottage Grove, Minn., Park HS) led Central with three shots apiece. Goalkeeper Steph Hasken (senior, Davenport, West HS) made three saves. Central held a 2-0 corner kick advantage but was outshot 11-8.

“It was a well-contested game,” Kobylinski said. “I just think we had poor decision-making today. A lot of things we practiced we didn’t follow through with in the game.

“But I can’t fault the effort, our effort was outstanding. We were just on the losing end today. We’ve got to regroup and get ready for the weekend.”

The Dutch (1-1) host back-to-back matches at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex soccer field, meeting Millikin (Ill.) at 3 p.m. Friday and Hamline (Minn.) at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
