Eight Iowa Conference championships
STORM LAKE — Central College sophomore Taylor Hill (Treynor) tied for first place and the Dutch women’s golf team came away with the Buena Vista Invitational championship on the season’s opening weekend Saturday.
The Dutch carded a 342-346—688, 7 strokes better than Simpson College in the four-team tournament at the par-72 Lake Creek Country Club.
Hill shot 76-83—159 but lost medalist honors through a tiebreaker. Ashley Smith (senior, Johnsburg, Ill.) rallied to finish third at 89-81—170, followed by Kelsey Van Tasell (sophomore, Pella) at 85-87—172, Emily Fisher (freshman, Wapello) at 99-95—194 and Chelsey Shuey (freshman, Ames) at 92-103—195.
“Any time you’re in position to compete for a win, that’s definitely a positive,” coach Tim Wilkinson said. “It makes you feel pretty good about the work you’ve done. It also gives you a nice boost for the rest of the season and heading into next week.”
It was Central’s first opportunity to play somewhere other than the team’s home course, the challenging Bos Landen Golf Club.
“This gives us a gauge of where we are,” Wilkinson said.
The Dutch play host to the Central Fall Invitational at Bos Landen Friday and Saturday, teeing off at 9 a.m. both days. Also in the field are Simpson, Loras, Dubuque, Coe and Iowa Western.
“We’ve got a pretty good idea of what we need to work on, not only individually but as a group,” Wilkinson said. “This sets up a good week of practice.”
