NAPERVILLE, ILL.—Central College freshman Eric Larson (Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) completed a personal-best effort in the decathlon at the North Central (Ill.) Gregory Invitational Wednesday. Larson scored 6,430 points to win the event and put himself in contention for a berth at the Division III national championships.

Larson’s score was a 247-point improvement over his previous best of 6,183 points and moved him up to ninth on the Division III top performers list.

“It’s exciting to see a freshman compete at this level,” said coach Joe Dunham. “Next weekend will be a great experience for him.”

Larson recorded marks of 11.37 seconds in the 100 meters, 21 feet, nine inches in the long jump, 35-9.25 in the shot put, 6-2.75 in the high jump, 51.21 in the 400 meters, 15.01 in the 110-meter hurdles, 120-0 in the discus throw, 12-9.5 in the pole vault, 108-10 in the javelin throw, and 5:04.82 in the 1,500 meters.

Meanwhile, Aaron Fuller (junior, Aberdeen, S.D., Roncalli HS) also competed in the decathlon, finishing in sixth-place with a score of 5,686. Morgan Sharp (junior, Grinnell) scored 3,763 in the heptathlon to take eighth. Both failed to improve his previous personal bests.

A partial Dutch squad will compete at the Wis.-La Crosse Last Chance Open Thursday. Entries to the national meet will be finalized Sunday, with the top 20 and top 22 marks being accepted to the men’s and women’s fields respectively along with the top 16 relays.
