Men's track | May 7, 2012

PELLA— Central College’s 4x400-meter relay has been named the Iowa Conference track events performer of the week for men's track and field.

Meanwhile pitcher Rhianna Fleetwood (junior, Sycamore, Ill.) was recognized as the league's female athlete of the week and designated player Abbey Strajack (freshman, Davenport, Assumption HS) was cited as the softball position player of the week. Morgan Darrow was named the field events performer of the week for women's track and field.

The foursome of Kyle Wood (senior, Newton), Trevor Veach (senior, Grinnell), Alex Edwards (freshman, Knoxville) and Allen Scovel (senior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) won the 4x400 relay at the Monmouth (Ill.) Inv. in 3:14.33. The time ranks seventh in Division III and increases the quartet’s chances of reaching the NCAA championships. The top 20 marks are accepted to the meet.

Fleetwood pitched two shutouts against regionally ranked teams and posted a 3-0 record at the Iowa Conference tournament. She threw a two-hitter in a 2-0 win against Simpson College Thursday, then came back to pitch 14 scoreless innings Saturday in victories over No. 4 Luther College and No. 19 Coe College. Fleetwood allowed 13 hits in 21 innings of work. She walked two and struck out 10 as the Dutch captured their first league tournament title since the tourney was restarted in 2006.

Strajack delivered the walk-off single in the tournament championship for the 2-1, 8 inning victory over Coe. She went 3-for-5 in the contest and finished the week with four hits in 16 at bats, hitting .250.

Darrow strengthened her chances for a bid to the national meet, posting a season’s best shot put mark of 45-7.75. She placed second in the event and narrowly missed the school record (45-8). The mark ranks sixth in Div. III. Darrow also won the hammer throw with a toss of 170-8.
