PELLA—Central College’s Mel McDermott (junior, Britt, West Hancock HS) has been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team.

McDermott, an exercise science major, carries a 3.93 grade point average. She earned all-region cross country honors with a 35th-place finish at the NCAA Central Regional championship, posting a personal best time of 23 minutes, 23 seconds. The mark ranks ninth on Central’s all-time 6,000-meter performance list.

To qualify for the academic team, a student-athlete must compile a 3.3 or better cumulative GPA and place in the top 35 at the regional meet.

McDermott is a two-time team co-captain and three-time letterwinner. She received the squad’s Most Valuable Runner Award in both 2010 and 2011 and is a two-time academic all-Iowa Conference pick.
