CEDAR RAPIDS — The Central College women’s tennis team suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Wartburg College Friday in the first round of the Iowa Conference team tournament.

The Knights (8-6) set the tone in doubles action. Kayla Donner (senior, Metamora, Ill., Metamora Township HS) and Emily Swartz (senior, Eldora, South Hardin HS) played the closest match for Central at No. 1, going into a tiebreaker before suffering a 7-3 defeat.

“It’s disappointing,” said coach Steve Tyler. “We knew we had to come out and win those doubles matches. We just didn’t do it.”

In singles action, Wartburg handed Swartz and Ashlei Bos (freshman, Weatherby Lake, Mo., Park Hill HS) defeats at Nos. 1 and 3 respectively. With five wins, the Knights clinched the victory and the remaining matches were called off.

“It’s not what we wanted but we have to put it behind us and come out strong tomorrow,” said Tyler.

Central (6-8) continues tournament play Saturday, taking on Simpson College in the fifth-place match. The contest will begin when a 9 a.m. semifinal match concludes. The Storm (7-7) suffered a 5-1 defeat to Cornell College Friday.
