Why Central?
The first time I visited the campus I completely fell in love! Then I found out I could participate in athletics and that helped seal the deal.

You are majoring in elementary education because…
Teaching is my passion. I love being in the schools, in front of a classroom and connecting with the students.

Who is your favorite professor?
My favorite professor is Dr. Diers. I love how she presents the information. I could take any class with her teaching and would absolutely love it.

What is your favorite Central College memory?
Participating in the Lemming Race my freshman year. Honestly, I had no clue what I was getting myself into until I was halfway through the race.

What do you love most about being a member of the Central Dutch women’s track and field team?
I love the family atmosphere between the coaches and other athletes. We all have a drive to do our best and support each other in our goals.

What is it like to compete in such a specialized event like the pole vault?
Besides the sheer joy of flying through the air, it is fun to be a part of a small, special group that you see at every meet. Vaulting is a lot of hard work involving speed, stamina, strength and coordination.

Think about the first time you pole vaulted: exciting or scary?
The first time I vaulted was in high school. I was a distance runner and didn’t want to keep running around and around the track, so I decided to join the vaulters. I had so much fun that first practice; planting the pole for the first time and landing in the pit was awesome! It was exciting, thrilling and great! Unfortunately, I was unaware that after each vaulting practice I was still required to do run my daily miles for distance runners. But I loved vaulting so much that I didn’t give up.

What is your preference: indoor track season or outdoor track season?
I would have to say indoor because it gets rid of the weather elements. I don’t have to worry about the wind blowing me off the runway or landing on a wet pit.

What is one thing people do not know about assistant coach Tyler Schiferl?
He is a true cowboy and horse whisperer! He actually makes ropes and saddles in his basement and goes to different competitions. He trains horses and is an excellent vaulter, but you would never know this because he is the most humble person and never talks about his accomplishments.

Who is your favorite track and field athlete of all time?
Kylie Hutson for sure! She is one of the best female vaulters in the world! I’ve gotten the chance to talk to her twice and she is so down-to-earth and just a genuinely nice person.

What is the best you have ever received from a track coach?
“Livin’ the dream!” Coach Tyler says this every day we vault and it is true. How many people get the chance to fly through the air?

What is your favorite activity to do in your free time?
It is hard to pick any one thing. If I ever do have free time you would probably find me reading a book or watching a movie. I like these because it gives me a chance to relax and de-stress.

All of your siblings’ names start with “M,” as do your parents’ names; is that your family’s favorite letter or is it simply a coincidence?
What began as coincidence ended up becoming something my parents couldn’t stop because they didn’t want one person being apart from the others. Besides, think of what they saved on monogramming.

Who is the one person, past or present, that you’d like to have lunch with?
I would love to skip lunch and go dancing with Ellen DeGeneres. I would probably never stop laughing the entire time and have so much fun!

What do you want most out of your senior year on the track?
Honestly, I would love to finish out the year healthy. I’ve had a hard time keeping my body from breaking down or getting injured in the past. I’ve never finished a season healthy.
