**This is a Central RED event for members of the Society. If interested in becoming a member, check out our website at www.central.edu/red/

We’ve all heard that honeybees are in trouble. Colony collapse disorder has made the news….a situation where bees disappear for no reason. And yet in Iowa, new beekeepers are springing up every day as this age-old process is being revived.  Andy will address what are the biggest challenges to the bee population, and their effect on agriculture if they die out.

Andy Joseph is the State Apiarist for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) and will address the problems in the bee community and the hope for the future that he sees. Joseph graduated from the University of Kentucky with an M.S. in Entomology.

All of us remember exactly where we were on Sept. 11, 2001. It was a day of desperation and despair for our country. Brian Clark is a survivor of the attacks on the World Trade Center that day. Clark worked for the American international brokerage firm Euro Brokers, which lost 61 employees that day—nearly one-fifth of its New York branch.

Join us for a wonderful day in Iowa City.  We will begin with a docent-led tour at historic Old Capitol on The University of Iowa’s campus.  Then we will take a brief walk through downtown Iowa City to the Lasansky Art Gallery.   We will meet Phillip and Diego Lasansky (son & grandson) of the world renowned printmaker, Mauricio Lasansky.  Phillip, who runs the gallery, will tell us about his father who is internationally known for developing innovative approaches to copper print making. We will see some of Mauricio’s  famous lithographs.  We will also hear from grandson, Diego, who is a recent University of Iowa graduate and an up-and-coming painter and printmaker in his own right.  Diego’s work has already garnered local, national, and international attention.  At age 21, he just finished his first solo museum exhibition at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art.  We will wrap up the day with lunch in downtown Iowa City at Atlas World Grill Restaurant known for its globally inspired contemporary cuisine. Limit of 30.  Bus available for up to 14.
