Central RED Society - Tulip Time

Thursday, March 16, 2017 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

**This is a Central RED event for members of the Society. If interested in becoming a member, check out our website at www.central.edu/red/

Join us in a fun evening learning about many of the Dutch costumes seen at Tulip Time. The costume of the men, women, and children often tell of the owner’s province, wealth, religion, occupation, marital status, and more. You’ll learn why the color red is used in many costumes, the uniqueness of an “orijizer” and a “kraplap” and many other interesting tidbits. Some of the models will be our Central RED members.

Milly Vande Kieft is a retired instructor of children’s literature at Central College. Being 100 percent Dutch from Sioux County in northwest Iowa, she has always been interested in the Dutch culture. Despite her Dutch heritage, Milly first became interested in the dress of the Dutch when she needed a Dutch costume for marching with her students in the Tulip Time parade. This sparked her interest in finding out about Dutch costumes, customs, foods, and lifestyle. Milly was on the original committee that created patterns of Dutch costumes for Pella residents. She now serves on the Convention and Visitors Bureau board, is a Pella tour guide, and is part of the Dutch Demos at Tulip Time. She is very active in her church leading children’s activities and musicals and finds great therapy at her space-age, electronic sewing machine.

Monday, March 27, 2017 Noon - 1:30 P.M.

**This is a Central RED event for members of the Society. If interested in becoming a member, check out our website at www.central.edu/red/

We’ve all heard that honeybees are in trouble. Colony collapse disorder has made the news….a situation where bees disappear for no reason. And yet in Iowa, new beekeepers are springing up every day as this age-old process is being revived.  Andy will address what are the biggest challenges to the bee population, and their effect on agriculture if they die out.

Andy Joseph is the State Apiarist for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) and will address the problems in the bee community and the hope for the future that he sees. Joseph graduated from the University of Kentucky with an M.S. in Entomology.
