Join us June 25-26
If science is your thing (think beakers, bats and blow torches) come to Central’s STEM Exploration June 25-26.
Our professors are the catalyst to your success, and you’ll see why as you spend one-on-one time with them. They’ll invite you to their labs (both indoor and outdoor) and are excited to get to know you. There is no cost to attend.
NOTE: Please bring long pants, socks and tennis shoes for bat netting. Also bring along a flashlight if you have one. This event is for high school aged students.
Learn about research, Central’s community and what it means to make an impact at Central College, and choose from the following workshops when you arrive:
- Bat Net Crazy
Join professor Russ Benedict and his rowdy bunch of students as they explore prairies and try to catch bats in the woods at night!
- Slime, Time, and Alchemy
Students will put on their own demo show featuring fun chemistry reactions such as slime, clock reaction, liquid nitrogen, elephant toothpaste, and turning pennies into “gold.”
- Hidden Structures and Heat
Using thermal imaging camera and engineering design, students will explore the concept of heat transfer: designing, building, and discovering hidden structures and glaring inefficiencies in models of an ordinary home.
- What’s your DNA sequence?
In this session you will determine your genotype for a gene involved with tasting bitter flavors. You will use the common techniques of forensics and genetic research labs. You will extract your own DNA and determine your genotype and see if it matches your phenotype.
- Statistics with Dolphins and Mathematically Claiming an Inheritance
Investigate how dolphins use statistical thinking (they’re so smart!) and learn about how mathematically easy it is to divide an inheritance.
- Picobot: Robots, Logic and Computer Science
See how to design a set of logical rules that will enable “picobot” to move around a screen as it tries to cover the entire area. Along the way, you’ll discover some fundamental concepts of computer science.
