Academic Year Program

Upward Bound Coordinators maintain regular contact with participants, meeting with them in their high schools and arranging workshops, field trips and attendance at cultural events. The following services are provided:

Upward Bound Coordinators visit each school served by Upward Bound on a monthly basis during the academic year. Coordinators may meet with Upward Bound students in an individual, per grade level or large group setting. Upward Bound students are expected to attend all regularly scheduled monthly visits in their school. The following information is a general curriculum covered during the academic school year. Curriculum may be subject to change.


September

Group meeting for all students including new September admits.

Grades 10-12: Students complete yearly information update sheets. Summer yearbook class video DVDs are distributed to students who attended summer 2007 program. Discussion includes: Academic Workshop agenda on 9/15, information update, overview of program services, student performance sheets and stipend policy.

Seniors: Provide senior college checklist and senior high school monthly calendar.

Activity: Academic Workshop to be held Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007.

Mailings: Travel reimbursement and ACT fee waiver eligibility letter for seniors, individual profile results and home reports from CTBS/4 taken on June 10, 2007 for summer 2007 participants, academic workshop registration to all students, new parent and student letter to fall admits.

TSCs provide yearly school calendar, student schedules for fall semester and update contact information if necessary.


October

Individual, group or grade level meeting.

Grades 10-12: Review Individualized Educational Plans (IEP). New fall admits and fall returners (those students who did not attend summer 2007 program) complete their IEP and write goals in each of the 4 areas. Summer attendees review IEPs written in June 2007 and goals for first semester and make any modifications, if necessary.

Seniors: Provide college comparison worksheet, sample personal resume and hints to a successful college visit. Provide Your Course to College and Making the Road to College Easier booklet.
Juniors: Provide junior year of high school calendar and types of institutions. Provide Making the Road to College Easier booklet.
Sophomores: Provide American Careers magazine.

Activity: Service Learning Project to be held October 27, 2007.

Mailings: Fall newsletter to all students, letter to seniors, e-mail account info for new students/ fall returners, parent edition of Careers magazine to parents of sophomores, October workshop registration for all students.


November

Individual, group or grade level meeting.

Grades 10-12: Provide information about academic skill-building workshop to be held December 1, 2007.

Seniors: Complete any college applications. Provide necessary college information, applications and/or fee waivers. Provide:

  1. Tips for completing successful scholarship applications
  2. Recommendation for scholarships (3 copies)
  3. Sampling of scholarship opportunities
Juniors: Complete Learning Style Inventory.
Sophomores: Complete careers survey.

Mailing: Academic workshop registration for all students.


December

Individual, group or grade level meeting.

Grades 10-12: Self-evaluate completion of first semester goals on Individualized Educational Plans (IEP).

Seniors: Provide Financial Aid information letter and Web resources.
Juniors: Provide results and follow up information on assessed learning style.
Sophomores: Follow up discussion on careers survey. Provide suggestions for test taking, study habits and time management.

Activity: Academic Workshop to be held December 1, 2007.
* Students who do not attend the workshop will be provided with workshop materials during their monthly school meeting.

Mailings: Winter newsletter to all students; Bridge applications to all current UB seniors will be mailed on December 14, 2007.


January

Recruiting presentations; current UB students may speak at presentation about their UB experiences to prospective students. Individual meetings per request and/or brief group meeting.

Grades 10-12: Write IEPs for second semester.

Seniors: Bridge applications due January 7, 2008.

Juniors: Provide information for ACT Workshop (date to be announced).

Activity: Academic Workshop- date to be announced
* Students who do not attend the workshop will be provided with workshop materials during their monthly school meeting.

Mailings: Academic workshop registration for all students; ACT workshop registration for juniors; returning applications for all current UB students who wish to attend the 2008 summer program and/or return for the 2008-09 academic year will be mailed January 14, 2008. Due by January 31, 2008. You must complete a returning application to continue in the program.


February

Recruiting presentations; current UB students asked to speak at presentation about their UB experiences to prospective students. Individual meetings per request and/or brief group meeting.

Juniors: Finalize registration for ACT workshop.

Activity: ACT Workshop for Juniors (a back-up date will be set for this workshop in the event of bad weather).


March

Interview all eligible applicants.
Individual, group or grade level meeting.

Seniors: Verify all college admission paperwork is complete.
Juniors: College visit information; provide ACT workshop results.
Sophomores: Course selection and college admission requirements.


April

Individual, group or grade level meeting.
All returning UB students complete summer class registration.
Large group meeting for all new UB students selected to attend summer program; complete summer class registration.

Seniors:
Follow-up, verify college admission and provide Off to College magazine.
Juniors: Follow-up, provide necessary college information.
Sophomores: Follow-up, provide necessary career information and Careers magazine.

Mailing: Spring newsletter for all students.


May

Individual, group or grade level meetings; End of year visit.
Self-evaluate completion of second semester goals on Individualized Educational Plans (IEP).
Complete student evaluation for academic year.
Upward Bound students review summer calendar and class schedules.
Parent Orientations held for new Upward Bound students selected and their parents in local districts.
