2007-2008 Academic Year Events
September Activity: Academic Workshop
Date: Saturday, Oct. 15, 2007
Audience: All current UB students, including summer attendees, new fall admits and
fall returners.
Overview: Students will attend two one-hour and 15 minute academic skill building sessions in the morning. Grade 10: Myers-Briggs Personality Assessment and interpretation of results; Grade 11: full length ACT used as a pre-assessment of skills; Grade 12: Completion of college applications and/or scholarship applications.
Social Activity: Students will attend Central College football game vs. Luther following lunch at the local Pizza Ranch.
October Activity: Service Learning
Date: Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007
Audience: All current UB students
Overview: Central College Upward Bound is proud to take part in the National Make a Difference Day. UB students and staff will participate in a large group community service project at Neil Smith Wildlife Refuge in Prairie City. After the service project, students will be joined at lunch by guest speaker, Tai Duong, a Vietnamese-American immigrant who is making a difference within his community.

Audience: All current UB students plus parents of senior students
Overview: Students will attend two one-hour and 15 minute academic skill building sessions in the morning. Grade 10: Stress management; Grade 11: ACT preparation in content areas of math and science; Grade 12: Financial Aid and steps for completion of the FAFSA. Parents of senior students are invited to come to this workshop for FAFSA preparation.
Afternoon Activity: Lunch at Central Market;
Service project: assembling care packages for homeless youth;
Tour the newly renovated Maytag Student Center

January Activity: Academic Workshop

Audience: All current UB students
Overview: Students will attend 2.5 hours of academic skill building sessions in the morning. Grade 10: Career Paths-6 guest speakers will be arranged in each major career path; Grade 11: Three 45-minute sessions on ACT preparation in reading, English and the ACT writing assessment; Grade 12: How to Succeed in College and Money Management
Social Activity: Private dance with DJ and bowling at EXCIT-A-BOWL in Pella.

March
Activity: ACT Workshop for Juniors
Date: Saturday, March 1, 2008
Audience: All current UB junior, select juniors in Educational Talent Search and campus community high school junior dependants.
Overview: Staff will administer a full length practice ACT provided by Kaplan Test Prep followed by a two-hour session on college planning. Parents are invited to lunch and afternoon session.
Registration: 8 a.m.; Testing: 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; Strategies Session: 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Cultural Event
Date: Sunday, May 11, 2008 at 1 p.m.
Audience: All current UB students
Overview: Students and staff will attend the performance of "STOMP" at the Civic Center of Des Moines. Registration materials will be mailed in the month of April.
Parent Orientation Nights: May 2008
Audience: New summer participants, including fall 2007 admits and summer 2008 admits.
New students selected to join the Upward Bound program beginning in summer 2008 are required to attend an orientation meeting. Students are asked to attend with at least one parent and/or guardian. Dates and times to be announced.
