
Eligibility
- Students may apply to the Central College Upward Bound (UB) or Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) program during their 9th, 10th or 11th grade year of high school. An informational recruiting meeting occurs in each target school, followed by an application and interview process with specified deadlines. Recruiting will begin in the month of November 2009 for the 2010 summer program and/or 2010-2011 academic year. The dates and times of the recruiting presentations for prospective students and parents will be as follows:
Monday, November 30: Des Moines North High School at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Information will also be posted on the district website.
Tuesday, December 1: Oskaloosa High School at 6:30 p.m. in the George Daily Board Room. Information will also be posted on the district website.
Tuesday, December 1: Eddyville-Blakesburg High School at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Information will also be printed in the "Rocket."
Wednesday, December 2: Sigourney High School at 6:30 p.m. in the library. Information will also be printed in the "Savage Express."
- All applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0.
- Applicants must also be members of families that meet current year federal income guidelines and/or be among the “first generation” in their family to go to college (A “first generation” student is defined as one who does not live with a parent who has graduated from a four-year college with a baccalaureate degree).
- Those applying to the UBMS program must have a demonstrated ability and/or interest in the areas of math and science.
- Upward Bound seeks applicants who have the potential, but lack support to pursue a postsecondary education.

The United States Department of Education requires each Upward Bound program to select two thirds of program participants from families whose taxable income does not exceed federal income guidelines annually and are first generation students. The remaining one-third of program participants selected must qualify under the income guidelines OR be first generation in their family to attend college. A student who does not qualify in either criteria is ineligible to participate in Upward Bound.
Central College Upward Bound is 100% funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) in the amount of $583,461.
Central College Upward Bound Math and Science is 100% funded through a grant from the U.S.Department of Education (USDE) in the amount of $250,000.
