Dear Central College Parents,

Winter has arrived with the first ice on the pond this week! Do you need to update your e-mail address for this newsletter? If so, you may do so anytime at http://www.central.edu/newsletters. This site allows you to unsubscribe an old e-mail address and subscribe with a new address anytime. Academics

By the end of this week, all students studying on the Pella campus next semester should be registered for spring semester classes. Any student who is not studying abroad next semester and has not yet registered should see his/her adviser immediately. This Friday, Nov. 21, is the withdrawal deadline for fall semester classes. Any student who wishes to withdraw from a class should see his/her adviser this week. Withdrawing from a class means a “W” will appear in the grade portion of the transcript. This does not count toward a student’s grade point average. A student must maintain 12 credit hours in order to be a full- time student. Dropping below 12 credit hours can impact a student’s ability to live on campus, receive health insurance and financial aid eligibility.

Getting Involved — Resident Advisers

Residence life has several open resident adviser positions for spring 2009. Application materials are located at https://my.central.edu under For Students. The compensation package for the semester includes 1/2 room and a $250 stipend for a value of about $1231. Students can contact Melissa Sharkey, assistant director of residence life, at sharkeym@central.edu or x5432 with questions. Applications are due Thursday, Nov. 20.

Resident advisers (RAs) are undergraduate members of the residence life team. It is expected that the resident adviser is sincerely interested in and supportive of the welfare of the students at Central College. Resident advisers are responsible for successfully implementing activities for their residents while playing an important part in daily administration of a residence hall or houses. They complete duty rounds and participate in weekly staff meetings. Resident adviser candidates must have at least a 2.2 cumulative grade point average with at least 12 credits completed and are expected to prioritize resident adviser responsibilities over all other extracurricular activities. This is an outstanding résumé building opportunity for students!

Career Center

Any student seeking an internship for credit for spring semester should see Karen Eilers, assistant director of career services, by the end of this semester. Students may e-mail eilersk@central.edu or call x5856 to make an appointment. For more information on upcoming career events and workshops see http://www.central.edu/career.

Health & Wellness

As we approach final exams and winter break, more students end up in the counseling center with severe anxious and/or depressed mood. Knowing the signs of mental health problems may help parents to ward off the suffering that often takes place in silence. Here are some primary symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression:

  • Sleep changes like early morning waking, waking through the night, or trouble getting out of bed in the morning
  • Increase or decrease in appetite
  • Loss of motivation, loss of activities that are usually pleasurable
  • Social withdrawal
  • Loss of concentration
  • Feelings of hopelessness or loss of self-esteem
  • Small problems that feel overwhelming
  • Intense worry without foundation for concern
  • Physical symptoms of anxiety: rapid heart rate, upset stomach, feelings of panic, headaches and/or sweaty palms

It should be noted that any of these symptoms by themselves may simply be passing signs of stress, but watch for clustering of symptoms and persistence. If this is the case, it’s important for parents to put their “crisis response plan” in place. Here are some suggestions for creating an effective response plan:

  1. Keep a list of important phone numbers with you and encourage your student to do so as well.
    a. dean of students, JoNes VanHecke 641-628-5293
    b. Counseling Center, Michelle Kellar and George Clark 641-628-5856
    c. director of residence life, Dave Garsow 641-628-5180
    d. director of security, Dean Thompson 641-628-5291
    e. City of Pella Police Department 641-628-4921
    f. on-campus emergencies 641-780-2847
  2. Get the Facts. Ask, “What exactly is the problem and when did it start?” “Whom have you spoken to so far about this?” “How are you feeling right now?”
  3. Acknowledge your limitations. After listening, you might suggest he/she go talk to a professional who can help sort things out.
  4. Decide who to contact depending on your concern.
  5. Talk with your student about arranging for a meeting with Michelle Kellar or George Clark in the counseling center. Explain that he/she will have to explain the urgency of his/her needs and that many students are brought into the center by friends for initial support.
  6. Arrange for a return call when he or she is safe and in the care of a responsible adult.
  7. Ask your student to give the counselor permission to speak with you. Because your student is a legal adult, records are kept confidential. A counselor cannot talk with you about your student’s concern unless given written permission to do so.
  8. Identify the contact person. Find out who will be coordinating care with the permission of your student.
  9. Decide together what steps to take next. Create a timeline to make decisions without rushing to remove your student from school or run to his/her side. Talk with your student to see what he/she wants to do next.
  10. Keep in touch at least once daily to give support, without sounding panicked yourself.

Winter Break Closing Procedures

Students will be notified of these procedures via e-mail and signs at the beginning of December: Residence areas close during winter break. Residents are asked to vacate their room 24 hours after their last exam or by noon, Saturday, Dec. 20, whichever comes first. Housing re-opens for students on Sunday, Jan. 18, at 8 a.m. Students who have a need to stay late in or arrive early to housing, must gain approval from the director of residence life and agree to break-housing conditions including a $35 daily fee. An online form will be available at the residence life Web site at the beginning of December.

Students who are involved in winter sports will get specific instructions from their coaches or residence life staff regarding winter break housing. These students will stay on campus together as a team but should not expect to stay in their individual rooms between Dec. 20 and Jan. 18.

We ask residents to complete the following before leaving:

  • Unplug all electrical devices including refrigerators.
  • Refrigerators should be defrosted (use a towel to catch the water), all food is removed, and the refrigerator door left open.
  • All windows and doors are locked.
  • All perishable food and trash from the room/suite/pod/house is removed.
  • Remove plants. Plants may be negatively affected by substantially reduced heating.
  • (For residents in suites/houses/pods) Clear belongings out of the suite bathroom so it can be cleaned during the break;

Staff members will be conducting a safety and maintenance inspection of each room upon closing. Students may be billed cleaning charges if conditions above are not met.

Moving out at semester time? Students return their key(s) to their hall director’s office in an envelope with the student’s name and room number clearly identified. If leaving Central College, they also turn in their ID cards.

Winter Bicycle Storage
Central’s safety and security department offers free indoor bicycle storage for students during the winter months. Any student wishing to store a bike for winter should contact Central College security at 641-780-2847.
