Advice to Parents
Keys to Success in College…
Researchers Gardner and Jewler (1995) detailed twenty-one steps to college success that you can share with your student. Perhaps these will be the keys to your student's success at Central College!
- Find and get to know one individual on campus who cares about your survival.
- Learn what helping resources your campus offers and where they are located.
- Understand why you are in college.
- Set up a daily schedule and stick to it.
- If you're attending classes full-time, try not to work more than 20 hours per week.
- Assess and improve your study habits.
- Join at least one study group.
- See your instructors outside class.
- Choose teachers who involve you in the learning process.
- Know how to find information on your campus, including at the library.
- Improve your writing.
- Develop critical thinking skills.
- Find a great academic advisor or counselor.
- Visit the career center early in your first term.
- Make at least one or two close friends among your peers.
- If you're not assertive enough, take assertiveness training.
- Get involved in campus activities.
- Take your health seriously.
- If you can't avoid stress, learn how to live with it.
- Show up for class.
- Try to have realistic expectations.
Are you aware that Central has a FREE academic support service, the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE)? Encourage your student to use the free peer/professional tutoring and to attend special help sessions called Supplemental Instruction (SI).
