Having a hand in your student's safety…
Making good choices can help keep your child safe. You can help keep your student safe by encouraging them to make good decisions. Have a conversation with your student and remind them of these things…
- Be safe on social networking sites. Don't make all your information public. Employers, college officials, peers, and other strangers are all watching your site!
- Don't walk alone after dark if at all possible. Walk with friends or call Campus Security for an escort.
- Don't give away your social security number or other personal information to unknown sources. Don't be a victim of identity theft.
- Protect your valuables.
- Don't engage in high-risk drinking. When your judgment is compromised or impaired, you could get hurt or hurt others. Most sexual assaults occur when one or both people are under the influence, as do drinking and driving accidents.
- Don't accept drinks from strangers. The number of date rape drugs being slipped into drinks makes it important to know exactly where your drink came from.
- Don't leave your room unlocked. If you're in there and sleeping, someone has easy access to you and your belongings. If you're not there, you're belongings and your roommates belongings are fair game.
- Keep an eye on textbooks, computers, iPods, stereos, cell phones, and wallets.
More hints and tips for your student:
- Be aware! Recognize your vulnerability.
- Report all suspicious persons, vehicles and activities to Security immediately.
- Use the "buddy system" and watch out for your neighbor.
- Remember the location of emergency phones.
- Avoid traveling alone at night.
- Confine walking to well-lit, regular traveled walks and pathways. Avoid shortcuts and keep away from shrubbery, bushes, alleyways, or any other unusual areas.
- Require callers to identify themselves before opening your door. Campus and non-campus residents should require official identification from all repair or service personnel.
- Do not let strangers in to use your telephone. Direct them to a public telephone.
- Students living in campus housing are not allowed to block open doors to dormitories or other buildings or use of fire exit doors is in violation of fire code.
Do not allow strangers to follow you into your residence hall!
