PELLA — Central College’s Cheri Doane, director of community-based learning, was presented with the President’s Volunteer Service Award March 1 in Des Moines.
Doane was nominated by the Corporation for National and Community Service Iowa State Office and the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service for her “leadership and service to the state of Iowa.” The award was presented by Jackie Norris, policy adviser for President Barack Obama to the Corporation for National Community Service.
The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in communities. The council created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. The award recognizes individuals, families and groups that have achieved a certain standard, measured by the number of hours of service over a year or cumulative hours earned over a lifetime.
Doane serves as commissioner for the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service with the purpose of developing and communicating a statewide vision of service. She currently is co-chair, alongside Jim Hayes of Simpson College, on the Iowa Campus Compact Program advisory council.
“Through her continued leadership, Cheri Doane has been integral in developing and sustaining civic engagement and service-learning initiatives on college campuses in the state of Iowa,” said Rachel Manuel, executive director of Iowa Campus Compact. “Thanks to Cheri’s dedication and efforts, Iowa Campus Compact is a vital resource to colleges and universities in the state seeking to become an engaged campus in their community.”
