PELLA — Central College met The Kresge Foundation’s challenge by raising $3.59 million for the education and psychology building, which opened in August. By reaching its fundraising goal, the foundation provided an additional $850,000 in grant money. The money given by The Kresge Foundation topped off Central’s $9 million fundraising drive for the building.
“Central College would like to extend a big ‘thank you’ to all faculty, staff, alumni, donors and community members who made this possible,” said President David Roe. “We’ve truly been blessed by their generosity, devotion and selfless support of the college in its endeavors.
The commitment of the Central College family to this project is an indicator of the enthusiasm and vision we all share for the college’s mission of preparing our students to be the leaders and world-changers of tomorrow. Though this significant milestone has been attained, Central College is still welcoming support for construction of this cutting-edge building. This facility is demonstrative of the college’s leadership in many areas of higher education.”
In approving this grant, the Kresge Foundation recognized Central College’s role as a leader in sustainability among Iowa’s higher education institutions. The college received the highest rating in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design with a platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Central’s education and psychology building project houses three of Central’s academic departments: education, psychology and communication studies. In addition, the building is home to Central’s award-winning community-based learning program and the new Center for Global Sustainability Education.
The Kresge Foundation is a national, private foundation that seeks to influence the quality of life for future generations by creating access and opportunity for the organization’s six fields of focused interest: health, the environment, arts and culture, education, human services and community development. In 2007, the foundation awarded 283 grants totaling $178.5 million with the majority of the awards going to nonprofit organizations in the United States.
