Central College-Community Choir and Orchestra hold concerts

PELLA — Central College-Community Choir and Central College-Community Orchestra will perform a concert Sunday, Nov. 15, in Douwstra Auditorium at 4 p.m. The concert, part of Central’s Sunday Concert Series, is free and open to the public.

Prior to Sunday’s concert, the choir and orchestra will perform Saturday, Nov. 14, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in West Des Moines at 7:30 p.m. That concert is also free and open to the public.

The concert is in dedication to the 200th anniversary of Franz Joseph Haydn’s death by performing The Creation. In his last years between 1796 and 1798, Haydn created his masterpiece, an oratorio The Creation. It depicts and celebrates the creation of the world as described in the Book of Genesis. The text from The Creation comes from Genesis, the Book of Psalms, and John Milton’s Genesis epic, Paradise Lost.

The College-Community Choir is under the direction of Mark Babcock, associate professor of music. Ty Myers, instructor of music, is director of the College-Community Orchestra. Vocal soloists include soprano Terri Crumley, tenor Jared McCarty, and bass Clay Hulsey.

The concert is a collaboration of over 100 musicians. The Central College-Community Choir has 83 members, while the Central College-Community Orchestra has 42 members.
