West African menu featured for international dinner Nov. 12

PELLA — Central College will hold a West African international dinner titled A Visit to Ghana Thursday, Nov. 12. Appetizers are served in Mills Gallery starting at 5:30 p.m. with dinner to follow in Graham Conference Center. Cost is $15 per person, $5 for children 6-10 and students with a Central College ID. Children 5 and under are free. To make a reservation, call 641-628-5334 or e-mail reimert@central.edu. Reservations deadline is Monday, Nov. 9.

Ghana native Samuel Mate-Kodjo, associate professor of Spanish, will host the dinner. His menu selection includes plantain crisps, kyin kyinga (meat skewers) and kose (black-eyed pea fritters), jollof rice — chicken and vegetarian versions (rice with chicken and tomatoes), groundnut stew (beef with peanuts), fufu (traditional dumpling served with stews), gari foto (cassava side dish) and salad. Dessert features tropical fruit salad, coconut cookies and peanut candy.

Following dinner is Mark and Kay De Cook’s Distinguished Leadership Lecture featuring Paul Loeb, an established American political writer. Loeb researches, writes and lectures on the reasons some people lead lives of social activism and why others abstain. The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. in Cox-Snow Recital Hall, and is free and open to the public.
