Requirements for the
Major and Minor in Spanish

Spanish major requirements

Your Spanish major at Central will require you to take from 30-46 semester hours of coursework, depending on the level at which you enter. If you begin at the first-year level, you will need to take 46 hours; at the second-year level, you'll take 40 hours; and at the third-year level, you'll take 30 hours. Where you begin will depend on your performance on the placement exam when you enter the college. After completing the third-year advanced courses (321-322), you'll need to take the following courses in Spanish (some of which you may take in Spain or Mexico):

  • Introduction to Hispanic Literature (often taken at the same time as 322)

  • one course in peninsular Spanish literature

  • one course in Latin American literature

  • one course in civilization and culture (Spain, Latin America or Latinos in the United States)

  • one 400-level literature seminar (which you'll take at the Pella campus, usually in your senior year after you return from abroad)

The remaining hours will be completed with electives at the 300 level or higher (700 or higher in Spain).

Spanish majors spend at least one semester studying abroad on our program in Granada, Spain, usually during their junior year. Some students choose to spend their whole junior year in Spain, while others may choose to spend an additional semester in Mexico with our program in Merida in the Yucatan.

Spanish majors must achieve the equivalent of advanced-level proficiency in all skills based on the ACTFL scale. Oral proficiency will be determined through an oral interview which will be conducted by a faculty member when you return from Spain.

Spanish minor requirements

For a minor in Spanish, you'll need to take 16 semester hours in Spanish if you start at the first or second-year level, or 8 semester hours if you start at the 321 level or higher. You'll also be required to reach a proficiency level of intermediate-high in all skills based on the ACTFL scale.

Teacher licensure requirements

Most students who plan to be secondary teachers complete their education courses before studying abroad--other than the methods course which is taken in the fall semester of the senior year along with the Spanish senior seminar. Student teaching is typically done in the spring semester of the senior year. For more information see the Education Department.
