Summary and Highlights of the 2008 Iowa Section Meeting

This year’s meeting was April 25-26 at Simpson College, Indianola. 54 people attended the meeting; 2 were undergraduates, 6 were graduate students, and 30 people were MAA members.

Our plenary speaker for Friday and Saturday was Carl Cowen, Indiana University--Purdue University Indianapolis. We had many presentations by guests and members of the Section. There was one undergraduate presentation, 6 graduate student presentations, and 19 non-student presentations.

Theron (TJ) Hitchman of University of Northern Iowa was elected Vice Chair-Elect. UNI will host the 2009 Section meeting in the fall. Moving into new officer positions after this year’s meeting are Elgin Johnston (Past-Chair), Larry Naylor (Chair), Murphy Waggoner (Vice-Chair), TJ Hitchman (Vice-Chair Elect), Bernadette Baker (Secretary).

This was the second year that Iowa Section NExT held a workshop before the Section. Iowa NExT welcomed six new members this year.

MAA Book sales at the meeting were good; the Section will receive a portion of the sales.
