A $6800 grant  from Humanities Iowa and the National Endowment for the Humanities will help fund the spring 2007 Geisler Library Writers Reading season. Our proposal was deemed "exemplary." The grant is being partially matched by the Friends of Central Arts, Pella Community High School, and the Patricia Naour Distinguished Visiting Writer Program. Authors appearing include Joshua Dolezal, Carol Bly, Robert Dana, Jane Hirshfield, and three graduating Central College poets: Garvice Brannon, Eric Davis and Nate Forsythe. For complete details see http://www.central.edu/library/writers.htm

Robin Martin, Geisler Library Director, was named the Iowa Library Association's Member of the Year 2006 for "extraordinary service and extraordinary leadership to the Iowa library community and the Iowa Library Association." Martin is past president of ILA, and has twice planned and hosted ILA's Leadership Institute.

Three librarians joined the Geisler Library faculty beginning July 2006:

Rachel Fleming is Collection Development Librarian. Rachel received the BA in History from Grinnell College (2002) and completed the MA in Library Science at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2006. Her experience includes two years as Library Research Assistant at the University of Missouri’s “Reflector,” a technology rich library environment supporting collaborative teaching, learning and experimentation for the College of Education, and cataloging and acquisitions internship at Lincoln University Library in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Arthur Mask is Technical Services Librarian, replacing Lois Smith who retired after 28 years of outstanding service. Arthur received the MLS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2003) and a BA in Religion from the University of Iowa (1998). His experience includes Special Collections and Acquisitions Assistant at the Wisconsin Primate Research Center, and Technical Services Librarian at Alvernia College, Reading Pennsylvania. Most recently, Arthur was Technical Services Librarian at Des Moines University Library where he was responsible for cataloging, library system management, reference, and instruction. His article “Life Isn’t Fair” appeared fall 2006 in the American Libraries.

Elizabeth McMahon is Reference and Instruction Librarian. Beth holds the MLIS from Kent State University (2004), an MA in Women's Studies from The Ohio State University (1997), and a BA in Women's and Peace Studies from Antioch College (1993). From 1998-2002, Beth was Lecturer I (adjunct) in the Department of Women's Studies at Ohio State where she taught a popular writing-intensive course. Most recently, she was Visiting Reference & Instruction Librarian at Earlham College where she taught library instruction in humanities, social sciences and fine arts courses. She took a leading role in re-envisioning the Earlham library web site to improve access to electronic resources for learning, teaching, and library collections.
