  • How do I set up a library instruction session for my class?
Contact  Beth McMahon (x5171 or x5345) or one of the other librarians to set up a time to bring your class(es) in for library instruction. Please provide a preferred date and an alternate date for the session, the number of students and their class level, and an idea of what sort of information you would like provided for your students. If it is an assignment-specific session, please provide the assignment as well.

There is a Library Instruction Form that you may print, fill out, and mail to Beth McMahon (Box 6500) to provide all of the relevant information. Please schedule at least two weeks in advance and plan on attending the session yourself as well.

Collection Development Services

  • How do I order a book, video, or CD-ROM?
Book Request cards available at the library circulation desk, or you may fill out this online request form.
Also, check with your department head about Choice cards (book reviews published by the Association of College and Research Libraries) that should be circulating around your department.   Indicate your desire by purchase by initialing the Choice card when it comes to you.
Return request cards or Choice cards to Rachel Fleming, Geisler Library, Campus Box 6500

To purchase videos, print this form and return it to Rachel Fleming. These forms are also available at the Library and at the Media Center. Be sure to check with your department chair to get purchasing approval for videos as department funds are limited.

If you have questions please contact Rachel Fleming at x5221 or e-mail at flemingr@central.edu.

  • Can the Library add a new journal title to the collection?
Contact Rachel Fleming to get a list of the journal subscriptions currently associated with your department. Talk over your ideas with your department. For budgetary reasons, the library must drop a title(s) of equivalent value before adding a new one. Decisions to add or drop journals should be made during summer in order to get subscriptions to begin in January.

  • What new material has been added to the library?
From the Library's Home Page you can click on the "New Titles" link, located in the Library Catalog column. The lists of new titles are updated at the beginning of each month and are alphabetized by the title of the work. New videos and other AV titles added to the collection can also be viewed from this page.
Or, just check the catalog to see if we have the desired title.

Circulation Services

  • How do I put material on reserve?
Library books, articles, videos, audios, or personal copies may be placed on Reserve.  Reserve Material Request Forms are available at the Circulation Desk.  Please give your Reserve materials and the completed form to Lana Goodrich, Circulation Supervisor (x5219).  Copyright laws require that all photocopies of articles or essays include the complete citation to the original source, so include this information on any articles to be placed on Reserve.

To help students and library staff, citations for the material on the form should match the citations on your syllabus.

Select the time period you wish the materials to circulate (2 hr, 3 hr, 6 hr, 1 day, 3 day, 7 day).

Please allow enough time for items to be processed prior to assigning Reserve readings in your classes.

Media Services

  • What services and equipment are available from the Media Center?
Check out the Media Center link for a complete list.

Can I give students direct link to a full-text article I read from one of your databases?
Yes, you can! Click here for instructions about creating hyperlinks your students can follow to full-text articles from EBSCOHost.

Can I use the online databases from my office or from home?
The databases we pay for recognize computer IP addresses from Central College, therefore anyone using a campus computer can access the database via Geisler's web pages. If you use the links that we have provided on our web pages, the library's proxy server will allow you to use many of the library's electronic resources from any internet connection, provided you have a valid Central username and password. (These are the same that you use for e-mail.) Our license agreements allow only current faculty, staff and students access to our resources.

How can I learn more about Information Literacy initiatives going on in Higher Education?
Find out more about Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education from the Association of College and Research Libraries, read articles about Information Literacy and related information on the Geisler Library Information Literacy page.

How can I encourage my students to take advantage of what the library has to offer?
Whenever you give out an assignment that requires research of some sort, why not consider taking some class time to bring your students over to the library for a library instruction session? These can be tailored to meet the needs of the students for a particular assignment, or they can be general sessions to help familiarize your students with research concepts and the layout of the library. Encourage your students to come and ask a librarian for help as they begin their projects. Students don't always realize that it is our job to assist them with their work in the library. While we strive to provide a welcoming atmosphere at the library, a simple statement from you about our willingness to answer their questions and guide them to resources might motivate them to approach us and dig deeper into their studies.

Does my family get to use Geisler Library?
Yes! Please, encourage your families to come to the library. Family members can get ID cards from Student Life. These can be used in the Library for checking out books.  We do not check out other types of library or media materials to family members, but they are welcome to use them in the library.
