POSITION: Assistant or Associate Professor of French and German

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full time, tenure track appointment beginning August 2010

QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. preferred, ABD considered, rank to be determined according to qualifications. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of superior undergraduate language teaching, and experience with proficiency-based language instruction. Optional desirable attributes include OPI certification and the ability to contribute to teacher preparation.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The department seeks a generalist in either French or German with the ability to teach elementary-level language courses in the other. The department seeks a candidate with superior communication and organizational skills, and a sincere interest in active recruitment of language majors. The normal course load is 21 – 24 semester hours per year, or three courses per semester. Potential applicants should be committed to undergraduate teaching and have an understanding of, and appreciation for, the liberal arts environment.

DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGES: The Department currently has 7 full-time faculty members, 9 foreign language assistants, and a visiting Chinese scholar.  It offers majors in French, German, and Spanish, and a minor in Chinese.  The French and German programs offer beginning, intermediate, and advanced language courses, as well as courses in literature and civilization.  Majors of French and German are expected to study abroad for at least one semester on Central College Abroad’s programs in Paris and Vienna, respectively, earning several of their upper-level credits there, and must demonstrate advanced level proficiency in all skills before they are approved for graduation.
