POSITION: Assistant Professor of Music, Orchestra Director/String Instructor

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, tenure line appointment starting August 2009

QUALIFICATIONS: Doctorate preferred, ABD considered, with a commitment to excellence in teaching.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities include directing the College-Community Orchestra; teaching string lessons (upper strings preferred), string methods for instrumental music education majors, and music appreciation or second-year music theory (dependent on the candidate’s expertise); recruiting students into the string program, and serving in the faculty trio (piano, violin and cello).

Department of Music: Central College offers the B.A. in music and in music education. Private study is available to all students in strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, voice, organ, piano and harpsichord. Ensembles available to all students (with various audition procedures and requirements) include the College-Community Orchestra, College-Community Chorus, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, College-Community Band, A Cappella Choir, Jazz Band, Chamber Singers, and a variety of instrumental and vocal chamber ensembles. Academically, the department offers a wide range of courses in music theory, literature, and applied techniques. The department offers music scholarships, including the prestigious Cox-Snow scholarship for distinguished scholars. The Department of Music is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:Applicants should send: 1) a letter of application, 2) a curriculum vitae, 3) copies of graduate and undergraduate transcripts, 4) recording of solo performance on violin or viola; 5) DVD of orchestral conducting (performance and rehearsal), 6) at least three confidential letters of reference, 7) evidence of successful teaching at the college level, and 8) statement of teaching philosophy to Dr. Paul Naour, Provost, Central College, 812 University Street, Pella, Iowa, 50219.
