POSITION: Tenure-track position in the Psychology Department beginning August, 2010
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Nine-month appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor
QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. or Psy.D.; enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching and liberal arts, student-faculty collaborative research, and service learning; expertise in counseling or clinical psychology with a specialization in either multicultural issues or applied neuropsychology preferred; support for the mission of the college.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach General Psychology, Psychopathology, Advanced Research in Psychology, and courses selected from Introduction to Research in Psychology, Principles of Counseling, Multicultural/Gender Issues in Psychology, Psychological Testing & Assessment, Neuropsychology/Brain & Behavior, Theories of Personality, and Intersections (our college-wide common first-year course); advise majors and non-majors; supervise internships; and share in administrative duties of the department. The normal faculty load is 21-23 semester hours per year, service on committees, and participation in the general life of the campus community. Faculty members are expected to be professionally active. Research or other scholarly activity, especially in collaboration with students, and professional work related to the discipline are all considered appropriate. Publication, while considered desirable, is not a primary objective.
DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY: The department of four faculty offers a core major focused on research skills (e.g., General Psychology, Introduction to Research in Psychology, Statistics, Advanced Research in Psychology) to which students add electives. Our goal is to prepare students both for successful graduate study and for B.A.-level employment in a variety of areas. Of the roughly 20 majors who graduate each year, approximately 30% go directly to graduate school with another 30-40% following after a period of on-the-job-experience. Students are encouraged to participate in at least one of our international studies programs or in the Metropolitan Center experience in Chicago or Washington, D.C.
Student interest in department programs is high. Class size in introductory courses ranges between 30-35 students, the range in upper-division classes is 15-25. All majors complete an independent research project, usually during their junior year. Nearly all majors do internships during their senior year. The department is housed in a new, $18-million-dollar building that enhances undergraduate education and research while modeling the latest in green building design practices. Faculty and students in the department have access to substantial technological resources. All full-time faculty have laptop computers that offer a variety of Windows-based software (e.g., SPSS, PowerPoint, MS Word, Excel) as well as access to the campus network, the Internet, Blackboard, and the library catalog.
