Schedule an interview/audition!
Art
- Students should prepare a portfolio that includes:
- approximately 10 pieces of representative work, including a sketchbook or sketches. Students may submit photographs, slides, or digital images (.jpeg files preferred).
- a letter of recommendation from an art instructor
- a listing of the work included in the portfolio (specify artwork date of completion, media used, and dimensions)
- a brief statement about the work and the creative process involved (1 page maximum)
- Portfolios must be postmarked by Friday, February 15, 2008. Mail to Dr. Terri Snyders Crumley, Office of Admission, Central College, 812 University Street, Pella, Iowa 50219.
- Portfolios will be returned after March 17, 2008.
- Students are strongly encouraged to make a personal campus visit and meet with the Central College art faculty prior to submission of their portfolio.
Communication Studies
- A letter of recommendation from a teacher who can speak to your strengths is required and should be brought with you at the time of your interview.
- Students should be prepared to summarize their notable accomplishments, articulate academic goals, and express co-curricular interests in a five minute presentation. A portfolio displaying distinguished academic and/or co-curricular work is encouraged.
- Interview time takes 10-15 minutes.
Creative Writing
- Students should submit 5 pages of poetry, one piece of short fiction, or one personal essay.
- Submissions must be postmarked by Friday, February 15, 2008. Mail to Dr. Terri Snyders Crumley, Office of Admission, Central College, 812 University Street, Pella, Iowa 50219.
- Portfolios will be returned after March 17, 2008.

Modern Language Award in French, German, or Spanish
- A letter of recommendation from a French, Spanish, or German teacher who can speak to your strengths is required and should be brought with you at the time of your interview.
- A proficiency exam which you will take when you arrive on campus.
- A written portion consisting of questions/short answer (to be written in French, Spanish, or German).
- Oral interview with Central College language faculty.
- Testing/interview time takes approximately one hour.
Music
- Perform two contrasting pieces or one piece with two contrasting sections; total performance time should not exceed 10 minutes.
- Vocalists are encouraged to perform from memory.
- Percussionist should prepare the following: marimba 2 or 4 mallet solo; snare drum solo (rudiments, multiple bounce and double stroke rolls); timpani solo; drumset (for those wanting to perform in jazz band or combos) groove in the following musical styles – swing, rock, shuffle, bossa nova, samba, and funk.
- A student may audition in one or more performance areas, but should prepare two pieces in their primary area and one in the secondary area.
- Sight reading, scales, and vocalizes may be requested, depending on the performance medium.
- Audition/interview time takes 15-20 minutes.
Accompaniment:
- Instrumentalists do not require an accompanist.
- Vocalists may bring their own accompanist or we can provide one for you. You may also bring pre-recorded accompaniment.
Preministerial
- Students should submit an application packet that includes:
- A letter of application addressing your involvement in high school, church and community activities and your career interests.
- A letter of recommendation from your minister, youth pastor or director of a volunteer organization completing this thought: “I recommend this student for the Preministerial Award because…”
- Written responses to the following questions. Do not exceed one double-spaced typed page per item.
- How has your personal spiritual journey influenced your interest in ministry?
- How will you use your spiritual leadership skills while a student at Central College?

Theatre
- A letter of recommendation from a drama teacher or coach is required and should be brought with you at the time of your audition/interview.
- Actors should select an age appropriate monologue, no longer than 90-seconds, from one of the following plays - Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley, Our Town by Thornton Wilder, Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, Brighton Beach Memoirs by Neil Simon, Rimers of Eldridge by Lanford Wilson, Death of a Salesmen by Arthur Miller, Top Girls by Carol Churchill.
These plays should be available in your school library. You may have to edit the monologues to achieve the appropriate length. Monologues must be memorized. We strongly encourage you to read the entire play. Part of the interview will be a discussion of your character's monologue and its context within the rest of the play.
- Technical Theatre - Please bring a portfolio of your work in theatre. This may include programs or posters, any drawings, draftings, stage manager's prompt book, or design work, and pictures of productions on which you have worked.
- Audition/interview time takes 15-20 minutes.
Audio/Video Submissions
Students who live more than 350 miles from Central may submit an audio or videotape demonstrating their performance ability in music, theatre, or speech. Visual artists, technical theatre, and journalism students may submit a portfolio of their works. Tapes and/or portfolio should be sent to Dr. Terri Snyders Crumley, Office of Admission, Central College, 812 University Street, Pella, Iowa 50219 and should be postmarked on or before Friday, February 15, 2008. An in-person audition/interview is recommended whenever possible.
