Off Campus Study for English Majors
Study Abroad:
London and Wales
The English faculty at
Central have extensive international experience; therefore, they encourage
majors to attend one of our international studies programs. Central College
has long recognized the value of an international perspective and has three
decades of experience in study abroad programs. Two centers especially
suited to English majors are located in Great Britain: one in Bloomsbury,
the heart of the intellectual center of London, and the other at Trinity
College
in
Carmarthen, Wales.
Students in London will
be able to study Shakespeare in text and in performance by taking advantage
of the yearly offerings of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Students will
also have the opportunity to take other literature and history courses
at our center or at the University of North London. In addition, many students
on our London Program have internships in theatre, or professional writing,
or Parliament. At Trinity College, students have an opportunity to study
Welsh language and literature, especially the poetry of Dylan Thomas and
R.S. Thomas, and the fiction of Caradoc Evans.
A number of English
majors have been able to complete a second major in a modern foreign language
such as French or Spanish, and have divided their time abroad between London
and one of our other centers such as Paris or Granada.
Chicago
Each year a few English majors study at the Chicago Metropolitan Center
for a semester. The students are able to choose between a number
of classes oriented toward the urban experience; these classes normally
meet on Friday only. Monday through Thursday students work at an
internship--usually in writing, editing, and publishing. For example,
Gena Rath writes that
"I had a great internship with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra that allowed
me to use and improve my writing skills as well as work within a world-renowned
organization. Not only does this look excellent on a resume, but
also living in Chicago is a wonderful experience!"
These intensive internships are especially
well suited to English majors who hope to go into a writing career directly
after college.
