About Us
The Education Department at Central College has a long standing
reputation as one of the top teacher preparation programs
in the state. Our education graduates are experienced
beginners who are highly skilled and in high demand.
Beginning with their very first education course our students,
typically freshmen, are involved with area schools. Initially
they observe classrooms at all levels. As they progress,
they assume increasing responsibility and are actively working
with children in planning and presenting lessons, reflecting
on their own performance, and that of their peers. By the
time they begin their student-teaching experience, Central
students will have had many hours of experience teaching
in the "real world" and are familiar with the
challenges of assuming responsibility for a classroom.
At each step in their journey, students are expected to
meet high standards. Their progress is monitored and they
are provided constructive feedback by their professors,
academic advisor, cooperating area professionals, and their
peers. Specific competencies are expected and verified in
each course and experience. By the end of their journey,
Central students have professional portfolios that set
them apart from most first-year teachers.
