Credential Files: An Important Notice from the Career Center!
For a vast number of years, Central College seniors have created "credential files" with the Career Center, consisting primarily of three letters of reference written by faculty, work supervisors, and school administrators/supervising teachers. For the most part, these files are no longer useful, because:
Because in the past, students were encouraged to create confidential files, we cannot simply send/give you your file. Consequently, we are requesting your permission to eliminate your credential file. As stated above, unless you have updated or used your file in the past 2-3 years, it is outdated and of little use to you in its present state.
Your credential file is not to be confused with your official college transcript. Your transcripts are a list of the courses you took and grades you received, and will always be available to you from Academic Records. Contact Jessica Strasser at strasserj@central.edu 641-628-5267 with requests regarding your transcripts.
This also does not mean that the Career Center is not here for you! Pat Kitzman and Karen Eilers are available to assist you in re-evaluating career direction; contemplating graduate or professional school; "re-packaging" yourself via an updated resume, vitae or portfolio; navigating online job searches; and preparing to interview. We can also put you in touch with other alumni to build your network and/or knowledge of a career field or logistical area. Call or email the career center staff at the numbers below ANYTIME you have a career-related question!
If you're contemplating Graduate School within 3-4 years of your graduation from Central, you will likely need letters written from Central College faculty. If that is the case for you, we can both retain your file and send your reference letters to graduate schools upon your request, OR you may want to request more updated letters from previous faculty and have them sent directly by the faculty member, if confidentiality is required. (Always ask permission for a reference letter and supply writers with your resume and a stamped, addressed envelope.)
If you would like to have your file retained for you at the Career Center, please notify us by phone, email or in writing before January 5, 2004. If we do not hear from you by January 5, 2004, we will eliminate your outdated credential file.
