Jake Anderson is in his sixth year as strength and conditioningcoordinator at Central College.
In 2007 he was named the NCAA Division III strength and conditioning coach of the year by American Football Monthly.

The Atlantic, Iowa, native is a certified strength and conditioning specialist and is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). In addition to creating and supervising strength and conditioning programs for Central athletes, Anderson developed an internship program for students interested in the field. Since 2003, 18 of his former student assistant coaches have received professional certification.

Anderson received a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports medicine at Iowa State University. He earned a master's degree in higher education at the University of Iowa.

Anderson was a graduate assistant at Iowa, helping implement the athletics department's strength and conditioning programs and assisting in speed, agility and conditioning training. He worked closely with Hawkeye football strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle.

At Iowa State, Anderson was a student assistant strength and conditioning coach for Olympic sports. He implemented workouts for all Olympic sports teams and was the primary assistant for men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling, baseball, volleyball and diving, designing year-round strength and conditioning programs for those squads.

Accompanying an intensified commitment level to strength and conditioning among Central student-athletes under Anderson’s leadership is a surge in interest in it as an academic pursuit. The college added strength and conditioning as an emphasis area for exercise science majors in 2008 and enlarged the strength and conditioning staff with a full-time assistant..

Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coordinator

Kyle Johnson is in his first year in the new position of assistant strength and conditioning coordinator at Central.

Previously Johnson spent two years as assistant sports performance director at Velocity Sports Performance in Franklin, Tenn. He graduated with honors from Central in 2002 and earned a master’s degree in health and human performance from Iowa State University in 2004. Johnson worked as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach with the Iowa State football squad and later was a personal trainer and fitness coach at Delta City Club in Nashville, Tenn.

While at Central, Johnson was a member of the Dutch football squad, receiving academic all-Iowa Conference honors.

A certified strength and conditioning specialist, Johnson is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He’s an Elliott, Iowa native and graduate of Villisca High School.

Johnson served as a USA Weightlifting club coach and remains a competitive weightlifter as well, winning Olympic lifting titles in the 105-kilogram class at the Georgia Games, the Chattanooga Open and the Southeastern Regional meet in 2005 and the Emory Open in 2007. He was 11th in the 2007 American Open.

STUDENT INTERNS

Chad Kraklio, a junior from Durant, is in his second year as a strength and conditioning intern, majoring in exercise science. He's in his first year as head student intern with multiple responsibilities, including oversight of all intern duties. He oversees implementation of the men’s basketball program and assists with all other teams.

Anderson says: “Chad’s leadership has been critical during a time of transition for our staff.  He has high expectations of himself and those around him in addition to a strong passion for strength and conditioning.

 

Zach Fears
Zach Fears, a senior from Liberty Center, is in his second year as a strength and conditioning intern, majoring in exercise science. 

Anderson says: “Zach has an infectious attitude and a strong desire to learn and grow our program here at Central.  He oversees our women’s soccer program, which he has taken to another level, and assists the other sports. He has helped devise new training exercises to challenge and develop our athletes.”

 

Korey Van Wyk
Korey Van Wyk, a junior from Grinnell, is in his third year as a strength and conditioning intern, majoring in exercise science.  He is also a member of the Dutch football team where he plays the S-back position.

Anderson says: “Korey continues to grow and has improved our program in so many ways.  He has a very strong passion for the power that nutrition plays out in the athlete’s lives and has helped us reconstruct our approach in counseling our athletes on nutrition and recovery means.  His knowledge has been instrumental in providing our athletes better access to nutritional knowledge.  Korey primarily works with the wrestling and softball teams along with the developmental football program.”

 

Lee Schroeder
Lee Schroeder, a junior from Malcom, is in his third year as a strength and conditioning coach intern, majoring in exercise science. Schroeder is also in his third season as an offensive lineman on the Dutch football team.

Anderson says: “Lee has advanced our program in a multitude of ways.  His passion has been research and implementation of recovery, particularly various massage and stretching protocols, in addition to restoration means.  Lee primarily works with the wrestling and softball teams along with the developmental football program.”

 

Loren Liming
Loren Liming, a senior from Ames, is in his second year as a strength and conditioning intern, majoring in exercise science.  He is also a member of the Dutch basketball team.  Liming is coming off a summer internship with the Iowa State football program.

Anderson says: “Loren oversees the implementation of the Dutch men’s and women’s tennis program and assists with the other sports.  He has been able grow the tennis program to another level in addition to being a leader on the men’s basketball team.”

 

David Zachary
David Zachary, a senior from Des Moines, is in his second year as a strength and conditioning intern, majoring in exercise science-health promotion. Zachary is also a running back on the Central football squad.

Anderson says: “David’s passion is the development of the high school athlete and he has a strong desire to impact the lives of young men and women.  His love for coaching is very evident.”

 

Nick Johnson
Nick Johnson, a junior from San Antonio, Texas, is in his third year as a strength and conditioning coach intern, majoring in exercise science. Johnson is also a member of the Central wrestling team.

Anderson says: “Nick has a strong attention to detail and is extremely dependable.  He has balanced the rigors of his own training with coaching which has proven beneficial in gaining the athletes’ trust and understanding.”

 

David Young
David Young, a sophomore from West Burlington, is in his second year as a strength and conditioning intern, majoring in exercise science. He is also a tight end on the Central football team.

Anderson says: “One would be hard-pressed to find a more diligent seeker of knowledge than David.  He has a strong passion for the iron game and will go to the extremes of the earth in pursuit of this knowledge.  He has critiqued our program from day one and has not hesitated to find ways to help us grow.” 

 

Doug Schrader
Doug Schrader, a sophomore from Des Moines, is in his first year as a strength and conditioning intern, majoring in exercise science. He is also a member of the Central football team.

Anderson says: “Doug continues to gain a better understanding of strength and conditioning.  He has been able to oversee most of our sports teams while they train and will soon be granted many more responsibilities.”

 

Justin Huber
Justin Huber, a junior from Albia, is in his second year as a strength and conditioning intern, majoring in exercise science. Huber is also a student coach for the football team and has assisted with the Pella Christian High School strength and conditioning program the past two years.

Anderson says: “Justin has an infectious positive attitude and a strong passion to coach.  His goal is to become a high school football coach and oversee all the weight room activities.  He is making significant progress in that direction as he has impacted a majority of sports teams here at Central College in addition to his work with high school athletes.”

 

Corey McPherson
Corey McPherson, a freshman from Jefferson, is in his first year as a strength and conditioning intern, majoring in exercise science.  He is also a member of the football team, playing in the offensive line.

Anderson says: “Corey has been excited about joining our staff for nearly two years now and we are very excited about his potential as a strength coach.  He has the drive and the willingness to learn.”

 

Charles Friday
Charles Friday, a sophomore from Rochelle, Ill., is in his first year as a strength and conditioning intern, majoring in exercise science.  He is also a member of the baseball team.

Anderson says: “Charles has always had a passion for strength training and has recently begun working with the athletes.  He has grown tremendously already and will continue to get more and more responsibility as he continues within our program.”
