Milk available at fitness center for post-workout nutrition

Central College recently received another upgrade to the Ron Schipper Fitness Center with the donation of  a $3,000 milk cooler and two shipments of chocolate milk for post-workout nutrition from Calvin and Denise Willis.

Calvin is a dairy consultant and the owner of CMW Nutrition in southern California, and his son Chris is a student strength and conditioning intern at Central.

The milk is being provided to Central students through the college’s exercise science program.

“Chris and I had talked about getting a fridge and some milk in the weight room to help ensure students were getting proper nutrition,” said Central College Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jake Anderson. “Denise heard about it and she really believed in the idea, and the family has been very generous.”

Anderson said that chocolate milk makes an ideal post workout meal for several reasons.

“It has sugary carbs which are exactly what an athlete needs,” said Anderson, because the sugar helps the carbohydrates get into muscles faster. “And milk-based proteins are very high-quality proteins.”

Chocolate milk has advantages over protein bars because as a liquid it gets digested quicker, it contains more protein than sports drinks, and Anderson said that the idea of drinking chocolate milk is received better by most people than taking supplements.

Anderson finds this to be the case among females especially.

“A lot of females don’t like the idea of adding all the bulk and mass that gets associated with so many supplements,” Anderson said. “Chocolate milk is not as threatening but it still offers a lot of the same nutrition and benefits.”

A deal was made through the Midwest Dairy Association that will give Central free milk from Anderson Erickson Dairy Co. for the next year.                                                                                     .

“We know that we can’t service all of our students with the supply we’re going to have,” said Anderson. “But we’re trying to spread it out as much as we can.”
