Softball | May 30, 2014

PELLA — Central College closed the 2014 softball campaign ranked 20th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s Division III Top 25 poll.

The Dutch, who posted a 30-12 record, made their 26th NCAA Division III tournament appearance in the past 29 seasons, playing host to a four-team regional May 9-11.

National champion Tufts (Mass.) (47-4) was rated No. 1 entering the tournament and is the unanimous choice for the top spot in the postseason after capturing the NCAA crown, followed by runner-up Salisbury (Md.) (44-5). Iowa Conference rival Luther (32-8) is No. 14 while Coe (36-8) is No. 24.

Central will return starters at eight positions next spring, led by third baseman Whitney Sowers (junior, Marshalltown), a first-team all-region honoree, and second baseman Abbey Strajack (junior, Davenport, Assumption HS), a second-team pick.
